Uninterrupted Play is What Really Matters

Yesterday was one of those days when I was so exhausted! The house was a complete mess, the Christmas tree still needed to come down, and ordering pizza for dinner was the easiest thing to do. Clean laundry on the sofa needed to be folded and a purchase from Walmart had to be returned. And to top that off, the contents from the kitchen pantry were removed for reorganization, now occupying every kitchen space. Everything seemed so chaotic!

And then this happened…

Bubbly six year old Sammy ran over to me with excitement in his eyes. He was thrilled to show me the house he designed out of Legos! I listened as he described every detail and how he used loose parts in his structure. I smiled from ear to ear and I’m positive there was a twinkle in my eye. Suddenly, my critical inner-chatter of what needed to be done house-wise was pushed aside. I was reminded of beautiful and remarkable key elements on my son’s educational journey…

“Uninterrupted Play”

No adult-led direction. Endless time to create. Resources provided. Respect to their space and ownership of how they choose to use their time and space. Concentration and curiosity in their own way. No adults hovering over them. Letting children just be. Each and every day.

At this moment I realized that…
Nothing. Else. Mattered.
But this.

Later, Sammy walked over to me and said, “I love you mom! You’re the best mom ever!” and gave me a kiss!

Yesterday wasn’t so bad after all… 🌹

What really matters is making sure I am keeping Sammy front and center. Randy and I are Blessed to have Sammy and cherish each and every day.

Thank you Nancy! I appreciate that. The dishes, the laundry, the cleaning, and everything else will all get done eventually… later… What’s most important is not missing out on Sammy’s life and development as he grows. His curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, and collaborative spirit is so vital. He is truly our Blessing and life is moving way too fast to miss out on these beautiful and remarkable memory makings.
